This project had two separate but similar aspects to it. Built-in bookshelves were installed in the living room. The Et center was designed to look more like a piece of furniture. To achieve this the pedestal feet were incorporated into the design. The bookshelves feature crown moldings above to match the existing. The Et center was designed to be shallow and tight to the wall for a flat screen tv. The tv sits on a pull-out swivel. The upper doors are pocket doors and the drawers below have racks to organize the DVDs. The small doors in the middle flip up and retract to expose the DVD player, cable box, and other components. This unit can be built without the flanking bookshelves.
This is a home office that we recently completed. The cabinets are made of hard maple and painted. The counter below the windows is solid cherry with a hand rubbed finish of tung oil and varnish, as are all of the cherry accents including the edgeband on the laminate desk top and the lid on the curved bench. This type of finish makes for a very smooth, durable surface with a hand-crafted look. All of the drawers are solid maple with all four corners dovetailed.
The flat panels on the inset doors were re-sawn on the bandsaw and bookmatched. Any doors that are one above the other and any drawers that are side by side were all cut from the same board and installed installed in line to preserve the continuity of the grain of the wood just as it had grown in the tree. It creates a great effect. The curved island counter top is 'curly or 'tiger' maple. It has a breadboard, walnut pegged edge that was glued on a curved form made specially for that island. All of the drawers are dovetailed as are all of the cross pieces on the wine rack. The beaded end panels are all tongue and groove and were made on the shaper and router table.
'Over the years we've custom crafted many kitchens and built-ins. Every piece fashioned and fit by hand. There's something about handmade cabinetry that you just can't compare to a manufactured kitchen.'
